UNLV to Open Business Startup Center

Posted: Updated:

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is preparing to start a program designed to help entrepreneurial students launch a business.

The UNLV Business Startup Center is expected to launch in about a week, said Robert Nielsen, business development officer for the university's division of research and graduate studies.

He said that along with helping would-be entrepreneurs, the business economic advisors will help students connect with the Downtown Project and entrepreneurs both downtown and at Switch and the Innevation Center in the southwest Las Vegas valley.

Nielsen said he expects to build relationships with angel investors and venture capital firms to connect budding startups with a source of funding.

"There's a lot of ideas out there," he said. "There's a lot of people who want to start their own business, (but) they just haven't taken that next step and that is what we want the startup center to do, to help them learn how to start a business and how to succeed."

Although Nielsen said he expects most of the startups to be tech focused because of the high level of interest in the field, but is open to entrepreneurs in all fields.
