LAS VEGAS -- A family is forced to move forward after experiencing a horrific tragedy with the murder of dentist Renee Bassett.
According to Henderson Police, Bassett's ex-husband killed her inside her Henderson home and then went to his car and shot himself.
Recent murder-suicides are troubling for domestic violence advocates who gathered at the Congregation Ner Tamid Temple Thursday night. The women listen to Dody Rehrer, who's a victim advocate with SAFE house.
The SAFE House organization is dedicated to helping women and family's dealing with domestic violence.
"We don't know when it's going to happen, who it's going to happen to, when its going to strike next," Rehrer said.
Rehrer said the murder of Henderson dentist Renee Bassett is a tragedy and when a marriage or a relationship is over, it doesn't mean the feelings are gone.
"They're still connected, the husband and wife, the mom and dad, they are still connected because they have the children, so no matter how long they've been divorced or how far separated they are, there's still an emotional attachment," Rehrer said.
Bassett's sister, Penny Fife, spoke about the murder and said her sister loved her two boys and dental practice.
"Renee was a strong woman, independent thinker, great dentist, and great mom," Fife said. "She was amazing an woman and her heart was huge."
Fife said she doesn't know why her sister's ex-husband took the actions he did. Now, she's forced to pick up the pieces and raise their two young boys.
"It's been amazing to see, in a few days, just the camaraderie and the family feeling we're trying to incorporate while maintaining that I'm not their mom, but I'm there for them." Fife said.
The memorial for Renee Bassett is scheduled for Saturday, March 9. A college fund has been set up for the two boys.
