School District to Hire 1,700 New Teachers

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County School District announced Thursday that it expects to hire at least 1,700 teachers for the upcoming school year.

The move will lower class sizes by up to two students, across the district. Money for the hiring effort is coming from a recent arbitration decision, which the district says saved it $23 million.

According to CCSD, enrollment is at an all-time high with 311,429 students in school this year and another 1,500 expected next year.

In a statement released Thursday evening, Ruben Murillo, president of the Clark County Education Association, said, "We understand the district's need to hire 2,000 teachers. However, it's not fair when seven hundred new teachers will be funded by the 11,000 teachers who lost income promised by the district for educational advancement and years of service. The Legislature has the responsibility to secure stable funding which would reduced class sizes, and provide for the recruitment and retention of the best teachers."
