Jail Inmate Dies at UMC after Struggle with Officers

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- A Clark County jail inmate died Wednesday after sustaining injuries from a struggle with corrections officers last month.

Luis Solano, 38, died at University Medical Center, according to Metro Police. The cause and manner of his death will be released by the Clark County Coroner's Office.

On Feb. 25, officers tried to subdue Solano, who police said was being uncooperative. He resisted the officers' attempts to restrain him and engaged them in an "extended struggle" that lasted about three minutes, the police said.

Once he was restrained, officers noticed he was unconscious and having a difficult time breathing, the police said. He was taken to UMC in critical condition.

Solano was being held at the Clark County Detention Center on drug charges, including the trafficking of cocaine and the possession and intent to sell marijuana.

The investigation remains ongoing and three corrections officers and a corrections sergeant who were involved in the incident have been placed on routine paid administrative leave. Their identities are expected to be released by the end of this week.
