LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Federal mediators in Las Vegas say they are ready to help try to settle a strike involving the city's second-largest taxicab company.
Federal mediator Kitty Simmons and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service said Tuesday they've scheduled a meeting at their Las Vegas office Wednesday with Yellow-Checker-Star Transportation and union officials representing the drivers.
About 1,400 of the company's 1,700 drivers are members of the Industrial Technical Professional Employees Union Local 4873. Union officials say about 1,000 of them have joined the strike that began at 12:01 a.m. Sunday after the company unilaterally implemented a contract rejected by 70 percent of their members.
Union negotiator Paul Bohelski says the main sticking points are pay and working conditions.
