LAS VEGAS - A viewer wants to know why an island has been installed – preventing drivers traveling westbound on Windmill Lane from turning left on to Vista Palmas.
The viewer says the island is causing a back-up of vehicles waiting to make u-turns.
Traffic8 might have had something to do with it. A viewer wrote in March 2011 about pre-island mass confusion in that area with cars traveling head-on, toward each other and jutting into the center turn lane from both directions.
A Driving You Crazy report prompted a study in which county engineering staff determined a median island at that location would improve safety.
The county will monitor the new u-turn issue, but county officials say they feel the changes made the area safer and less accident prone.
On a separate note, changes were made to the traffic signal timing at nearby Pollock Drive and Windmill – an alternate route for safer left turns onto Windmill. The changes will increase the frequency of the turns.
