Acts of Kindness: Charlotte Liszka

LAS VEGAS - Every year, approximately 33,000 troops come and go through the gates at McCarran International Airport.

Charlotte Liszka, also known as "The General", and her band of merry volunteers are there to greet them with open arms. Many of these troops are on their way out, either to training or to be stationed overseas. Before they go, they are treated to a meal, a place to relax and some basic amenities.

"She will be here at two o'clock in the morning to welcome one person, or she will be here with her crew to welcome 20 to 30 folks," said McCarran USO Center Director Doug Bradford. "It doesn't make any difference what time of day, what the situation is, what the weather's like, because she will be here, because that's the drive she has."

That drive has helped grow her program from four volunteers to more than 20 in just two years - helping to serve more than 75,000 troops. In the past few weeks, Liszka has volunteered more than 200 hours of her time.

"She's gotten more hugs then any of us from appreciative young people for what she's done for them," said veteran and volunteer Terry Sullivan. "Help them out, support them, make them feel that they're wanted, they're appreciated."

Liszka's personal connection with the military may have inspired her to help others.

"I am really passionate about this. My brother was in Vietnam," she said. "I've worked at the airport for almost 18 years, and I've seen soldiers sleep on the floor. It really upset me. I mean it really did - sleeping on their clothes on the floor. I think that was my defining moment. I said, ‘Whenever that happens, I want to be a part of it.'"

8 News NOW decided it was time to reward Charlotte Liszka for her efforts – giving her $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness.

"It's nothing what I do, compared to what they give. I really mean that. I get more out of this than you can believe," she said.
