Nellis Air Force Base to Auction Military Equipment

Posted: Updated:

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. - Nellis Air Force Base is auctioning military equipment that has caught the attention of survivalists anticipating an end to civilization.

Government Liquidation has sold military jets for scrap metal in the past. This time, they're selling giant storage tanks once used by Nellis to hold liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen.

The auction will help the military generate revenue. The online auction site govliquidation.com is putting four of these tanks on the auction block. The bidding starts at $50 each.

The base drilled holes in the sides of the four tanks so they can't be used to store liquid nitrogen, but they can be used for other purposes. Government Liquidation officials say they have received interest from people wanting to buy the tanks and turn them into bunkers.

"Customers will, many times, will purchase these to use as a storage container for other uses just like you would a shed in your backyard," said Tim McPhillips with Government Liquidation. "Customers can also use them. They build shelters out of them. The doomsday preppers will build their bunkers out of them. We've already heard from a customer who's expressed interest in cutting them opening to use as flower beds."

That would be one expensive flower bed. These tanks usually go for $800 to $3,000.

If you are lucky enough to win one of these tanks at auction, you must pick it up in person. That would require heavy machinery like a crane and/or a flatbed truck, because each tank weighs approximately 25,000 pounds.

The auction starts Tuesday at 9 p.m. The auction closes Friday afternoon. Government Liquidation is also auctioning thousands of other military items such as trucks and some household items such as washing machines.
