LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The parents of an aspiring rapper from Oakland, Calif., are flying to Las Vegas to claim their 27-year-old son's body.

Kenneth Cherry, who used the name Kenny Clutch, was killed when someone in a Range Rover opened fire on Cherry's Maserati early Thursday on the Las Vegas Strip, causing a fiery crash.

Cherry's great aunt, Patricia Sims of Oakland, told The Associated Press that Cherry recently moved to Las Vegas from Northern California.

"The issue is -- the honest to God issue is -- gun control," said Cherry's father, Kenneth Cherry Sr. "I don't know where all of these guns are coming from -- illegal guns -- because most of them are illegal. It has to be addressed.

"You feel when you hear it, but the way it touched home for me today, I don't want nobody to feel like I feel now. Nobody. Not a person to feel like this. I just have to go deal with it. I have to go mourn my son's death behind some stupidity, I have to mourn it."

Before moving to Las Vegas, Cherry Jr. was arrested in 2007 in Oakland, Calif., and charged with possession of marijuana, having a concealed firearm in a vehicle and carrying a loaded firearm that was not registered.

He later pleaded no contest to the loaded firearm charge. He served two days in a county jail and was placed on five years felony probation. The court later reduced his felony to a misdemeanor.

Cherry Jr.'s Las Vegas attorney, Vicki Greco, said she never handled any criminal cases for him, but instead handled his traffic tickets.

"I was absolutely shocked, because I have a lot of clients and some are very, very bad and some are very, very good, and they just got caught up in the wrong thing," she said. But Ken? Getting caught up in something like this was devastating."

A cab driver, 62-year-old Michael Boldon and a passenger were also killed. Boldon was identified by his older sister. The passenger has not yet been identified.

At least six other people, including a passenger in the Maserati, were injured.

Police didn't release the names of the other people involved but said the Maserati passenger was cooperating with police.
