Man Wanted in Wife's Killing

Posted: Updated:

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- North Las Vegas Police are trying to track down a man wanted in the slaying of his wife.

It's been almost five months since Beverly McFarlane was killed. Her family said they knew it was murder from the very beginning.

Detectives had the same feeling, but they had to wait for evidence from the coroner's office.

Doctors said McFarlane slowly slipped away as her brain started to shut down after a severe beating. North Las Vegas Police said it all started in August 2012 at McFarlane's home after she suffered a beating at the hands of her husband Anthony Mayo.

"Domestic violence cases are often times fueled by rage. These attacks occur in the heat of the moment and are often times, again, fueled by emotion," North Las Vegas police spokeswoman Chrissie Coon said. "It was reported that some time during that alleged attack, she was also struck with a household vacuum cleaner."

According to court documents, the couple's 9-year-old daughter said Mayo choked her mom and then grabbed the vacuum cleaner. Through a closed door, the daughter could hear her mother's screams.

"It can be very frustrating in a case like this where it's taken five months to obtain a warrant of arrest for a suspect, for something that might seem like a very easy case to solve," Coon said.

McFarlane's family was frustrated that an arrest was never made, but her family feels closure could be coming.

"It's very hard to deal with a situation like this," Beverly's mother, Bernice McFarlane, said.

Bernice McFarlane had one message for her former son-in-law.

"This is not fair," she said. "I don't want them to kill you, but I want them to take you off the streets, because you are going to do it to somebody else."

There was no reason given for why the beating happened.

North Las Vegas Police said Anthony Mayo also threatened the 9-year-old if she tried to call authorities.

Officers believe Mayo could be in southern California where he has family.
