LAS VEGAS - John Schiffler loves his new home, but his move there didn't go smoothly. His half-loaded moving truck disappeared from the front of his old home.
"I had contracted with the company (AAA Movers), and they explicitly told me I had to drive the vehicle for my belongings to be insured," he said.
Panicked, Schiffler headed to the new house. "Sure enough, they were here setting up outside, waiting for us to arrive," he said.
Their initial response infuriated him. "Basically, (they) thought it was funny they had driven the truck, and when I pressed the issue, they told me they were going to unload it and leave," he said.
Stranded with half his stuff still at the old place, he called AAA Movers and got what he calls a surprising reaction.
"His response was, ‘Don't call anymore. You are not getting your money, and I know your address,'" Schiffler said. "I felt it was a threat."
Shocked, he turned to 8 on Your Side. "I watch Channel 8 every morning getting ready for work, and I had seen some of your stories, and thought they might have the resources," he said.
8 on Your Side contacted the Nevada Transportation Authority and Nevada Attorney General's Office. An investigation was launched, a hearing was held and Schiffler got $600 back. AAA Movers was also slapped with a $1,000 suspended fine.
Schiffler's happy he got justice and can now resume making his new house a home.
"Channel 8, the response was amazing," he said. "I've seen some of the stories that 8 on Your Side has done, and I never thought I would be one of those stories, but I am really glad that your service was there for myself."
AAA Movers declined to comment for this story.
