LAS VEGAS -- A former high school football coach and teacher from Gainesville, Fla., will spend 90 days in jail for involuntary manslaughter in the one-punch death of a Utah man at a Las Vegas casino.

Benjamin Gerard Hawkins, 39, was sentenced Thursday following his November conviction in the death of 46-year-old John Massie.

Hawkins, who is black, testified Massie derided him with racial comments in a men's restroom at O'Shea's Casino in July 2011, and approached him again after they walked separately to the gaming floor. Hawkins testified he was defending himself.

Massie family members, including his three children, spoke at the sentencing before Clark County District Court Judge Valerie Adair.

Hawkins apologized to the Massie family.

Hawkins will be on probation for five years.
