Bible Study Leader Accused of Sexual Assault of Children

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- A volunteer bible study leader is facing numerous counts of sexual assault and police fear there could be more victims.

David James, 29, was arrested by Metro Police in January and charged with 10 counts of sexual assault with a victim under 14, two counts of sexual assault with a victim under 16, and 10 counts of lewdness with a minor under 14.

James was also booked by Henderson Police on 10 counts of lewdness with a minor under 14 and four counts of sexual assault.

Police said James volunteered to lead bible study classes at several different religious centers in the Las Vegas valley to gain access to victims.

"The circumstances were similar as far as how he approached people to gain their trust through a church and family and gained access to children," Metro Police Lt. Dan McGrath said. "Shortly after we arrested this individual we received info from Henderson police that they had an almost identical case."

Licensed marriage and family therapist Donna Wilburn said young victims have a hard time coming forward because they don't want to get themselves or their abusers in trouble.

"It's not just the betrayal themselves, that this person that they trusted violated them, but there is intimacy issues that develop, anxiety issues, post traumatic stress and then it affects them their whole lives," Wilburn said.

Metro Police investigators said this case could get much bigger.

"We are concerned that there could be some more victims out there," McGrath said.

Investigators have not said what churches or religious centers James is linked to and is expected in court on March 3rd.

Anyone who has concerns their child may have been a victim of James is asked to call Metro Police's Sexual Assault Section at 828-3421 or the Henderson Police at 267-4750. Anyone with information on the case may contact Crimestoppers at 385-5555 or online at www.crimestoppersnv.com.
