Local Boy Gets Therapy Dogs

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- When we first met 4-year-old Conrad Barajas, he had no idea two therapy dogs
would soon greet him right at his doorstep.

Unlike most kids his age, Conrad has gone through a lifetime of challenges, including 10 surgeries to reconstruct severe facial disfigurements discovered at birth.

Still, he met us with a smile and tons of energy. His parents said that's just the kind of boy he is.

"He's really strong, I know that because I've seen him endure everything," said his father
Eduardo Barajas.

The surgeries are painful and long-- with some hospital visits lasting for days.

During one hospital stay the family came across a therapy dog that helped keep Conrad's mind off his pain.

After our interview wrapped up we asked Conrad to head to his front door.

He didn't have many words but it was easy to tell he couldn't be happier. And it wasn't only Conrad who was thrilled.

For the two poodles, it's their second chance at a loving home.

"It's just makes my heart so happy. We deal with some of the most sadness in the world
and this is our balance. This is what makes it all worth it," said Khristi Kehr with "Care A
Lot" Animal Rescue. She said their original owners could no longer take care of the pups, and
gave them up to the organization.

Eventually, they were connected with Conrad.

The Barajas are now a family of five, with two four-legged companions that will
be able to comfort them in the struggles that lie ahead.

Care A Lot Animal Rescue waived the adoption fee for the Barajas family. Las Vegas Dog Resort is providing life time boarding free of charge. The Pink Poodle Parlor donated free grooming for life and an anonymous donor is giving the family a year's supply of dog food.
