CCSD Announces 3 New Turnaround Schools

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County School District is taking drastic measures to fix three struggling schools. The schools have been placed into the Turnaround Program.

The schools are: Cimarron-Memorial High School, Sunrise Mountain High School and Elizabeth Wilhelm Elementary School. The schools were chosen because of their low performance.

Under the turnaround model, these schools will receive extra money and support. The schools will also have a change in principals and some staff members.

Superintendent Dwight D. Jones said it is important for the community to understand that schools designated for turnaround are not being punished.

"We cannot leave these kids in a situation where their chances for success aren't the same as others in the district," he said.

At Cimmaron-Memorial, students learned Monday they will get a new principal and 10 new teachers. Their feelings were mixed.

"I just don't like it. I don't think it's fair to all the other teachers," said Mario Gamboa, 12th grader.

"It will be better for students, " said 9th grader Tyjuan Sharp. "It will be more challenging."

"These schools were selected after reviewing their last three years of academic achievement, graduation rates,as well as staff going over to the schools and interviewing the people who work there, in person," said Amanda Fulkerson, CCSD spokesperson.

These three schools will join the 10 others already in the program. One of those schools is Mojave High School.

"We had a campus that was basically out of control from a student behavior standpoint," said Antonio Rael, Mojave High School principal.

Mojave underwent a change in some staff members and the principal.

The current principals and staff at the three schools will remain on hand to help the students transition. No educators are being fired, they will be reassigned to new positions. The new principals for the three schools will be announced in the coming weeks.
