8 on Your Side Helps Woman Get Heat Restored

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - For weeks, Deidra Hodges used her oven to heat her home. When that didn't work, she turned to boiling water on the stove. They were dangerous options, but she felt she had no choice. Her heater stopped working in December, and her landlady refused to fix it.

"She said there was no money," Deidra recalls.

According to Nevada law, that's no excuse. Landlords must provide adequate heating and keep heaters maintained in good working order. Once a broken heater is reported, landlords have 48 hours to fix it.

By the time Deidra called 8 on Your Side, six weeks had passed. 8 on Your Side gave management a call.

"Within I'd say three days from when I contacted Channel 8, I had working, operational central heat," Deidra said.

Management said the delay was due to them needing a crane to install the new heater.

Deidra doesn't care about the excuses. All that matters to her is that her problem is now solved. "Now that I have heat, music to my ears," she said.

Renters should know the laws in Nevada that regulate landlords and tenants. They should also go over their leases carefully to see what tenants and landlords are responsible for.
