BOULDER CITY, Nev. -- A family killed in a tragedy was remembered Saturday.
On Jan. 21, a Metro Police lieutenant shot and killed his wife and young son, before killing himself. Saturday was a day of remembrance for the tight knit community of Boulder City.
Those inside St. Andrews Catholic Church took the time to pray for 5-year-old Max, his mother Michelle and father Hans.
"I believe that right now, the right thing to do is call the community together and spend time remembering our neighbors whether we knew them well, knew them a little or didn't know them at all," said Pastor Jason King.
Police said Lt. Hans Walkers shot his 46-year-old wife, Michelle and their son, Max and then set their home on fire and killed himself before police had the chance to make it inside.
Michelle was also a former officer with Metro.
"I think, it's a time to get together and do what we can do and that's pray for the families that are suffering right now because of this tragedy," said Olivia Moya.
Christi Olsen did know the Walters and said she has fond memories.
"I remember his dad was very kind and Max was an awesome little boy. He went to preschool with my son and they were good friends, " said Olsen.
Olsen said she was devastated by the news and had a hard time explaining it to her son.
"I just explained it the best way that I could and I told him that Max wouldn't be at school the next day because he had to go to heaven," said Olsen.
A memorial fund has been set up for Michelle Walter's family.
You can make a donation to the Michelle and Max Memorial Fund at the Wells Fargo Bank's Green Valley Parkway and Pebble branch.
