Former Hockey Player Faces Prison Time in Child Sex Case

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A former NHL player could face two to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced in Las Vegas after pleading guilty in a case alleging he repeatedly sexually assaulted a girl over a four-year period.

Michael McBain is due for sentencing Wednesday in Clark County District Court after pleading guilty in September to attempted sexual assault and attempted lewdness with a minor under 14.

McBain is 36. His lawyer, Robert Draskovich, says McBain is remorseful and didn't want to cause the girl and her family more pain by taking the case to trial.

McBain played from 1997-99 for the NHL Tampa Bay Lightning and played in the United Kingdom before playing from 2003-2008 for the minor league Las Vegas Wranglers.

McBain later became a Wranglers assistant coach.
