LAS VEGAS -- Federal and local emergency crews responded to a suspicious item found outside a factory at the Nevada National Security Site Tuesday afternoon, site spokesman Dave Taylor said.
The item was found outside a device factory security perimeter fence in the central portion of the site, formerly known as the Nevada Test Site. The site is located about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
Taylor said the item was "non-threatening" and provided no safety or security risks to the site or its employees. All employees have been accounted for and no injuries were reported, he said.
Initially the National Nuclear Security Administration released a brief statement alerting the media about 5:30 p.m. to the situation but provided no further details.
