LAS VEGAS -- The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools ranked Nevada in the middle of the pack when it comes to the strength of its charter school law.
In a report released Tuesday, the organization ranked Nevada 22nd among 43 states that have approved charter school laws.
Nevada, which adopted its law in 1997, has 32 public charter schools with a combined 22,542 students. Those students make up 4.3 percent of the public school students in the state.
There were 14 new charter schools opened in Nevada over the past five years, while four were closed.
The organization praised Nevada for having a law that doesn't cap the number of charter schools or restrict where they may be located. Nevada also was cited for supporting adequate funding for charter schools.
But the state was encouraged to allow charter schools to have greater autonomy.
