LAS VEGAS -- Nevada state Senator Kelvin Atkinson said he never had any knowledge of a direct threat allegedly made by Assemblyman Steven Brooks against incoming Assembly speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick.

"Let me make it very clear, I never told anyone that I had knowledge from Steve of a direct threat on the Speaker's life."

Atkinson issued his statement to the media Monday morning. He referred to Brooks as a good man who is going through a very difficult period. Assemblyman Pat Hickey also commented on the case in his newsletter calling it "one damn sad human story."

Atkinson said he received a call from Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Barlow asking for help. He said Barlow told him that Brooks had been released from a care facility and had a loaded gun in his car.

According to Atkinson's statement, "Councilman Barlow stated that Steven 'had it in for Marilyn Kirkpatrick' and blamed her for his life spiraling out of control."

Atkinson said he had grave concerns for Kirkpatrick's well being and Brooks safety and felt he should notify the Speaker and the Majority leader of the Assembly.

Brooks was arrested on Jan. 19 and charged with threatening a public official.

Hickey, in his newsletter, said he sat next to Brooks at the last legislative session and they had a friendly relationship.

Hickey claims Brooks invited him to dinner after Kirkpatrick was selected as the Speaker of the Assembly. "Over our meal, he asked if my Caucus would consider voting as a block for some 'unnamed' new leadership team. Pushing back from the table, I said, 'Steven -- time out.' I told him my Caucus and I were not only supportive of Marilyn being the new Speaker, we wouldn't even consider employing such political shenanigans so close to the start of a new legislative session.
