Super Bowl Means Big Business in Las Vegas

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - The biggest night in sports also means one of the biggest weekends in Las Vegas. Super Bowl Sunday is this weekend.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority says more than 300,000 people came to town for last year's big game. That resulted in approximately $93 million in wagers.

Sunset Station Race and Sports Book Director Chuck Esposito says this weekend's game has the potential to break the record for wagers made on a single Super Bowl game.

"The best handle was in 2006. It was Seattle and Pittsburgh, was 94.5 million dollars legally bet here in the State of Nevada," he said. "I think with this match-up, you may have a shot. Again, a very popular San Francisco team, and the east-coast/west-coast battle is tremendous for us."

Small proposition bets, meanwhile, now make up as much as 30 percent of the money bet on Super Bowl Sunday. For example, you can bet if Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant will score more points than the 49ers or what Beyonce's hairstyle will be during the half-time show.

You'll be able to catch Super Bowl XLVII on Channel 8. CBS will provide coverage all day leading up to the pre-game show at 3 p.m. with kick-off set for 3:30 p.m.

Afterwards, you'll be able to catch an all new "Elementary", followed by a special edition of 8 News NOW.
