Laps For Charity at Las Vegas Speedway

Posted: Updated:

About a thousand people raced around the track at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to raise money for children's charities Sunday.

Organizers say each year the turnout gets bigger.

"Last year raised $32,000 which was $8,000 more than the first year which I think is good because we were just breaking it into the community," said Las Vegas Chapter Director of Speedway Children's Charities Paulette Anderson. "Now we have more and more people hearing about it."

Anderson says last year the organization donated to about 60 different children's groups. She says events like "Laps for Charity" helped raise over 190 thousand dollars last year.

Twice as many car clubs came out this year then last year, and many people brought the whole family down.

"My wife has a lead foot. We have one driver here, yeah she'll have a lead foot. We're a family of lead feet," said Horace Miller in the family car.

Miller says after racing his sports car he had to go back and pick up the family. He says it only cost 30 dollars per car, not per person. They got to go three laps around the Super Speedway.

Many of the people we talked to say driving up to 75 miles per hour was fun, especially knowing it was going to help fund organizations like Babies Bounty, Shade Tree, Miracle Flights for Kids, and many others.
