LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Investigators say a landing gear collapsed on a twin-engine Piper Aerostar airplane that crashed and burned this month at North Las Vegas Airport.

A pilot and flight instructor escaped injury in the Jan. 2 crash.

A preliminary National Transportation Safety Board report dated Thursday made no finding about the cause of the crash or why the landing gear failed. Final NTSB reports sometimes take a year to complete.

The NTSB said the pilot was practicing simulated single-engine landings when the main landing gear collapsed and the aircraft veered off the runway and caught fire.
