Volunteers Educate Neighbors on Fire Safety

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Volunteers went door-to-door near Charleston Boulevard and Hinson Street Monday to educate residents on how to prevent fires.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said crews have responded to several fires in the area and the department wants to make sure everyone has the information to stay safe.

Dozens of volunteers canvassed neighborhoods to spread the message of fire safety.

The effort was organized by the local chapter of the American Red Cross and the fire department.

"We had two fire deaths here in the last few months," Szymanski said, adding that those deaths could have been prevented.

Both were caused by careless smoking, he said.

Medical conditions and mobility issues made it impossible for them to escape their burning homes.

Volunteers provided pamphlets addressing other issues, including how to check a fire alarm and how to properly heat a home.
