Nevada Ranks High in Homicides Involving Black Victims

Posted: Updated:

Nevada had one of the nation's highest homicide rates involving black victims from 2005 through 2009, according to the Violence Policy Center.

The Washington, D.C., organization that advocates stricter firearms regulations reported that Nevada ranked from fourth to 10th during those years.

The center also reported that in the years 2005 through 2007 and 2009 (2008 data wasn't available) there were 220 homicides involving black victims in Nevada. Of those, 169 or 76.8 percent were killed by firearms in cases where the weapon could be identified.

In an update released Jan. 30, the organization reported that Nevada's black homicide rate slipped to 15th in 2010, when the rate was 17.3 per 100,000 black residents. That rate, based on 46 homicide victims, still exceeded the national average of 16.32 homicides per 100,000 black residents.

Gun rights advocates say mental illness is the real reason behind mass murder incidents. There are strong indications that most, if not all, of the killers in recent mass murders had severe mental or emotional issues.
Nevada is notoriously stingy when it comes to support for mental health services. It already ranked among the worst in the nation for mental health programs, and then another $80 million was chopped during the past few years.
