County School Police Talk Safety

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Parents across the country are concerned for their children's safety after the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting that killed 20 children and six adults in Newtown, Conn., last month.

Clark County School District police said they have been ahead of the curve for decades when it comes to protecting students.

They said the department has been a step ahead of most of the country when it comes to protecting schools, but more can be done.

According to district police, it is a fully functioning police department with a crime scene investigation unit, dispatch center and mobile command center.

"This actually serves as our back-up dispatch center," school district police Sgt. Mike Blackeye said. "So (if) something happens to the building, we have evacuation plans to revert to operate the entire department from this vehicle."

The department began with only 25 officers. Over the years that number has grown to about 160, including a chief of police, two captains, five lieutenants, and 17 sergeants.
