New Website Showcases School District Budget

LAS VEGAS - The Clark County School District is pushing for more transparency – launching a new website that displays the CCSD budget for all to see.

The new website called Open Book lets users look at where the district's money is going. For example, if you want to see how much is appropriated for the School Board of Trustees, with a couple of clicks, you can see the board receives $640,000.

CCSD officials say they are receiving a positive response to the Open Book portal from politicians, business owners and taxpayers.

The website consolidates information that used to be found in stacks of paper records and would require a formal request to retrieve. Now, everyone has access to it, and it's easy to read.

Throughout the site, users can look as the district compares itself to the other biggest school districts in the country, using easy to read graphs. Those graphs show CCSD spends far less per year than its counterparts. CCSD spends approximately $36.54 per student per day.

The Nevada Policy Research Institute says, however, that's not the only money the district spends, which also includes federal and state grants.

"I would love to see all of the funds. I would love to see more specificity. Let's see teachers' salaries. Let's see administrators' salaries," said Victor Joecks with NPRI.

The Nevada State Education Association, meanwhile, says this portal outlines the challenges of CCSD and how underfunded they believe the district is.

"One of the things I noticed was that there was 14 cents per student on English language learners fluency," said Nick Di Archangel with NSEA. "With education in general, we feel that it's underfunded."

A spokesperson for CCSD said the Open Book portal is a work in progress and information will continue to be added.
