Police Bust Marijuana Grow Operation

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police are investigating a marijuana grow house in the southwest Las Vegas valley.

The operation was found near Tropicana Avenue and Fort Apache Road Friday afternoon.

According to police, hundreds of plants have been found inside the home in the 9600 block of Cathedral Stairs Court.

Metro Police officer Jose Hernandez said this massive home was converted into a grow house operation where there was no furniture, just marijuana.

"These are extremely dangerous for the residents when you're talking about electricity that these homes are not designed to operate," Hernandez said. "This type of equipment they have inside with the lights, ventilation, and its way more than it's designed to handle."

The bust even got the attention of Sheriff Doug Gillespie after he showed up to have a look at the grow house for himself.

"He's (Gillespie) very concerned about the detectives that are working these particular types of grows, it's a very dangerous situation for all those that are involved," Hernandez said.

Neighbors said they saw little of the married couple who would occasionally drop by the home.

"The last time I saw the husband and wife was about two weeks ago," neighbor Fredi Acob said. "I don't see a lot of activity."

The bust comes on the heels of the seizure of a massive marijuana grow house near Desert Inn and Fort Apache roads Wednesday. In that raid, officers seized nearly 1,500 marijuana plants and arrested two people.

Then on Thursday, police busted another grow operation in the 9200 block of Snow Flower Avenue, near Fort Apache and Flamingo roads. In that bust, 148 marijuana plants were found.

It is unknown whether the grow houses are connected.
