LAS VEGAS -- Jesse Hill, an 18-year-old graduate of Northwest Career Technical Academy, was walking on a sidewalk on New Year's Day when a car lost control and hit Hill and his girlfriend.

Hill died and his girlfriend is still in a hospital in critical condition.

Students, friends and family lit candles in memory of Hill, who graduated last year. His girlfriend is a junior at the school.

Those at the vigil said they are hoping Hill's girlfriend recovers.

Hill was a student at Embry Riddle University in Arizona, studying aeronautical engineering.

His aunt attended the vigil.

"It's been a very trying time for my family," said Yvonne Fletcher, Hill's aunt. Her nephew, she said, was "full of life."

Hill and his girlfriend were going to take some pictures when they were hit by the car.

Cristian Diaz, 19, the driver believed to be speeding and driving without a license when his car ran off the road, was arrested. His passenger, 18-year-old Ricardo Velasquez, was booked on drug-related charges.
