A former assistant property manager for the General Services Administration in Las Vegas who oversaw the federal courthouse pleaded guilty Friday to witness tampering and making false statements to federal agents.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A judge in Las Vegas agreed to postpone an evidence hearing for a man arrested with an unloaded assault rifle at his former Las Vegas high school.

Deputy Public Defender Dedree Miles said Tuesday she hopes by Jan. 15 to negotiate a resolution of the charges against 19-year-old Jake Benton Howell.

Howell faces five charges of possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds. If convicted, he could get several years in jail.

Howell is a student at Utah Valley University. He was arrested at his former high school, Northwest Career and Technical Academy, Dec. 21 with an SKS rifle, ammunition, a 16-inch bayonet and three survival-style knives in his car.

Howell told investigators he anticipated the collapse of society.

Authorities had linked him to another teen currently facing federal weapon charges in Las Vegas.
