LAS VEGAS  -- The woman implicated in the stabbing death of a 10-year-old girl appeared in a Las Vegas courtroom Wednesday on charges of kidnapping and murder.

Judge Deborah Lippis denied bail for 50-year-old Brenda Stokes who is accused of killing Jade Morris. The young girl's body was found in North Las Vegas in an undeveloped housing tract on Dec. 27. The Clark County coroner said the child had been stabbed. Stokes is now facing six counts related to Jade's death, including murder, kidnapping and battery.

Stokes attorney, Tony Liker, said Stokes is innocent.

"I'm representing this woman because I believe she's innocent. The statistics, the facts don't back up what the DA said," Liker said.

He suggested the parents could be linked to the girl's death which upset Jade's family members.

"Why would they do this? She's only 10 years old. The mother and father would not kill their own child," said Brenda Morris, Jade's grandmother.

Morris was last seen with Stokes on Dec. 21 when the two were supposed to be going Christmas shopping. Stokes, also known as Brenda Wilson, is the girlfriend of Jade's father. Stokes was arrested later that night after allegedly slashing an employee at the Bellagio casino. Detectives say they later found clothes in Stokes' home containing the blood of young Jade Morris.

Liker said Stokes will plead not guilty to all six charges against her. Stokes is scheduled to appear again in court on March 28.

Jade Morris will be buried on Jan. 9. Family members are in the process of setting up a fund to pay for the funeral.
