RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada saw more requests for gun background checks in the days after the school shooting in Connecticut than any other weekend this year.
The Nevada Department of Public Safety says gun dealers submitted 2,383 background requests Friday through Sunday. That surpassed the 2,315 made during the Black Friday weekend of Nov. 23-25 that typically is the annual peak.
Through Dec. 16, Nevada authorities had fielded 114,000 requests for background checks for the year compared with a total of 104,288 in 2011.
Pat Conmay, the chief of the state public safety technology division, told the Reno Gazette-Journal the shooting might have played a role in the spike. But he says the holiday season always boosts the number of requests and noted there were two gun shows in Las Vegas last weekend.
