Holiday Rush at the Post Office

LAS VEGAS -- The United States Postal Service handled an estimated 655 million pieces of mail Monday, which is the busiest day of the year for the agency.

The post office expects a 20 percent jump in the number of packages shipped this year. That is why the agency is asking that people try to get has much done as they can online at usps.com.

People can buy postage, print it and have their regular mail carrier pick up the parcel. People can also order free boxes, stamps and find ZIP codes.

"Everybody is so busy this time of year. There is so much to be done cards, letters decorating. We have hired extra people to handle the mail volume. So, we are very busy," Marilyn Fenimore with the Las Vegas Post Office said.

Local post offices will also have self-serve kiosks open late.

Here are some important deadlines to keep in mind:

  • December 20 - First Class Letters
  • December 21 - Priority Mail parcels
  • December 22 - Express Mail
