Students Return to Classroom After CT Shooting

LAS VEGAS -- Students across the nation went back to class Monday after one of the worst mass shootings at a school in the United State's history.

In the Las Vegas valley, safety is a concern, especially among those who are taking care of young children.

Teachers and parents told 8 News NOW that the most important thing is to keep the school day as normal as possible for the children.

First grade teacher Cristiana Blunt said heading back to school on Monday was tough.

"The first thing I want to do when I came in this morning was hug them," she said.

Cambeiro Elementary School Principal Patty Rosales said aside from more police presence around campus, the staff has become more aware of the safety procedures and crisis plan already in place in case of an emergency.

Parent Luz Ramirez said she urged her child to go to school despite the shooting on Friday.

"She asked, ‘Mommy what happened?'" Ramirez said. I told my daughter, ‘It's OK, it's OK, it's fine.'"

Shaun Wilcox, who has a child in first grade, said parents put their trust in the school to make sure they keep their children safe.

"I do feel bad for what happened in Connecticut and what not, but stuff happens everywhere," he said.

To help boost security, Cambeiro Elementary added a new computer check-in system this year that requires visitors to sign in and have their pictures taken.

The Clark County School District plans to come up with more specific drills starting next year to respond to an incident like the one in Connecticut..

For Blunt, protecting her students -- her babies as she calls them -- is her No. 1 priority.

"I will do anything in my power, anything for them," she said.

The school district also reminds parents to keep their contact numbers current, that way in case of an emergency it can get in touch with parents as soon as possible.
