LAS VEGAS -- All Las Vegas-area Bruce Scher Goodyear stores closed Monday. Major layoffs are expected as a result of the closures.
Vegasgoodyear.com, a website for the business, lists 13 southern Nevada locations. Customers are receiving calls this morning to pick up their cars. Employees were told to clear out their tools Monday morning after repairing the remaining cars.
"I left a competitor to come here and I've only been here for 6 months," store manager Karl Reiser said. "But to lose a job around the holidays is, it leaves you reeling. It leaves you upset, but we'll get through it."
Laid-off workers said they hoped Goodyear corporate will take over some of the stores.
A family spokesperson sent the following statement to 8 News Now: "With the passing of Mr. Scher, the Bruce Scher Goodyear stores have closed in Las Vegas effective today. Several technicians will be retained long enough to finish the cars that remain at our facilities. All employees will be paid in full this week."
Firestone Auto is building 12 locations in Las Vegas this coming year. According to the company, it wants to hire many of the laid-off Goodyear employees. A manager suggested interested workers apply online.
