LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police said a man shot a woman next to the registration desk at the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas Friday night. He then turned the gun on himself, the police said.
According to police, they received reports of several gunshots about 8:30 p.m. and two people laying on the floor.
The woman was transported to University Medical Center in critical condition, but later died. The man was declared dead at the scene.
In a tweet by Excalibur, the Las Vegas Strip resort said: "An isolated incident has occurred at Excalibur this evening, local authorities have the matter under control."
Witnesses in the nearby gaming area described the scene as chaotic as people tried to run from the gun fire.
"I'm devastated," witness Zakeyaha Amecker said. "I can't really put words. It's dreadful. That's all I can say."
The Excalibur casino and hotel, on the southwest corner of Las Vegas Boulevard South and Tropicana Avenue, is owned by MGM Resorts International.
