Living Green: Burkholder Students Build Eco-Friendly Float

HENDERSON, Nev. - Holiday parades are common this time of year, but they can also send a message. A group of Henderson students is participating in a traditional Christmas parade with some new, eco-friendly thinking.

The theme of their float is "The Grinch That Stole Christmas", but there's nothing grouchy and surly about this group of tumbling students from Burkholder Middle School.

Using recycled material like cardboard, wood, chicken wire and tissue paper to make their entry, their attitude for saving the planet is quite pleasant and selfless.

Coach Katie Duffy says the students are learning a valuable lesson of waste not, want not to make their float.

"It's really important that we recycle," she said. "The kids are into saving the earth right now, and this is just a small portion of it. So if they can make a float that's energy efficient and made out of all recyclable material, and it can look like this, you can send that message to the community that, ‘Hey, recycle! This is what's going to help us. You don't have to keep buying new stuff. You can use what's already here.'"

The kids have worked hard the past several weekends - making a thousand tissue paper flowers, a sleigh of reclaimed wood and cardboard and a "Welcome to Whoville" sign of LED lights surrounded by recycled bottle caps.

Republic Services supplied the recycled materials used to make the Jaguars' tumbling team float this year. The kids will compete for a $1,000 prize in this year's Winterfest Parade in Henderson.

The evening light parade takes place Saturday, December 15 at 5 p.m. in the Water Street District of downtown Henderson. Friday night, Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen will light the Christmas tree to kick off the Winterfest activities.
