LAS VEGAS -- The Southern Nevada Health District has shut down the employee dining room and a 24-hour cafe at the Golden Nugget for significant health code violations, most notably a pest infestation.

A notice posted on the door of the employee dining room declared the facility an "imminent health hazard" and listed Dec. 11 as the date of the closure. The health district cited 27 problems with pests, spoiled food and unsanitary conditions.

The reason behind the closure of the Carson Street Cafe are not yet fully known.

In a statement from the Golden Nugget, the company said: "We have temporarily closed our Employee Dining Area and Carson Street Café kitchen in order to correct a health code violation. The highest priority has been placed on remedying the violation so that we may re-open as soon as possible."

According to a spokesman for the owner, "We are clearly upset and disappointed that somebody dropped the ball. This should never happen. We retain the services of a professional outside vendor, and are angry and disappointed this happened. A full investigation is being launched as to how this occurred, and we assure all of our guests that it will not happen again."

The most recent inspection report on the SNHD website is dated Nov. 13, and it references pest control problems, spoiled food and improper food storage. The facility earned a C grade at that time.

The restaurants are closed indefinitely.
