LAS VEGAS - Blaze Trumble was six years old when he made a significant decision.

"Five years ago, his mother asked him what he wanted for his birthday wish, meaning - I think - what do you want to do for your birthday?" Blaze's father Don Trumble said. "He said he wanted to help the homeless."

With each passing year, Blaze has become more dedicated to his cause, collecting blankets for the homeless.

"Each year, it's grown from a couple hundred the first year to seven, eight, nine hundred last year to be able to help so many in need to stay warm during winter months," said Las Vegas Rescue Mission Director of Development John Fogal. "Great kid, great smile, great heart."

The often shy, sweet-natured 10-year-old originally wanted to hand out hot chocolate, before coming up with the idea of giving out blankets.

"It just starts getting cold this time of year, so I just thought that they'd like it instead of something else," he said.

"You're talking about one young man who, over the years, probably three thousand blankets and then coats and jackets to go with it," Fogal said. "So, that's a lot of people who have been helped."

It doesn't stop with blankets.

"Whether it be to help someone, hold the door for them, stuff that kind of is lost in the younger generation. He always goes the extra mile when it comes to stuff like that," Blaze's brother Donny Trumble said.

"Any kid that on his own thinks of the idea of using his birthday as an opportunity to help those less fortunate is a fantastic kid," Fogal said.

Last year, the goal was 500 blankets. This year, they are hoping for 900. Retail giant Walmart was inspired by Blaze and has joined the effort. So far, they've collected 700 blankets this season.

"It's pretty cool to see how they are to get one," Blaze said.

8 News NOW decided it was time to reward Blaze's efforts – awarding him $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness.
