LAS VEGAS -- Bail was denied for the mother and stepfather accused of beating a 7-year-old boy to death.

Markiece Palmer and Dina Palmer appeared in a Las Vegas court Thursday morning to formally hear the murder charges against them. Their preliminary hearing date was set for Jan. 18, 2013.

The judge denied bail due to the nature of the crime. The prosecutor described seeing pictures of injuries to 7-year-old Roderick "RJ" Arrington Jr. that were extremely severe. It was also noted a police report was filed in Illinois when RJ was 1-year-old that alleged Dina Palmer was seen abusing the boy in public.

According to police, Markiece Palmer beat RJ with a spatula, belt and possibly a wooden paddle after he said the boy lied about reading a Bible verse and not doing his homework. RJ was taken to the hospital on Nov. 29 and died the next day.
