LAS VEGAS - When the Liberty High School Patriots take the field at Sam Boyd Stadium Saturday in the Division 1 State Championship, the team and fans will get an extra boost from a one-of-its-kind cheer team.

The Liberty Patriots Sparkle Squad is a cheer team comprised of Liberty students with disabilities. The team is instructed by members of the freshman, junior varsity and varsity cheer teams. The Sparkle Squad is the first such cheer team in southern Nevada.

"A lot of my students don't get interaction with the other students, and they're talking a lot more than in the past," said Liberty special education teacher Erin Murray.

"I think the girls' confidence is boosted," added Sparkle Squad Coach Autumn Hesia. "Everything Sparkle has done has made them a better person."

"It's honestly life changing," said Sparkle Squad Coach Marissa Mastrovalerio.

Student coaches like Marissa and Autumn earn credits for teaching the cheers via a daily class. They say they're also learning incredible life skills.

For the members of the squad, there is plenty of enthusiasm and many smiles to go around. They will be cheering on the Patriots Saturday against Bishop Gorman.
