Couch Potato Lacing Up For Sunday's Half Marathon

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- About 30,000 runners will lace up their shoes to take on the Rock ‘n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon Sunday.

For some runners, participation is more than just pride or a medal.

Carol McCallum, who plans on doing the half marathon, said she has rarely jogged, let alone exercised.

But something happened that has McCallum walking with more vigor and vitality than ever before.

For years, McCallum, would watch the marathon from her couch.

"I am not a runner," she said.

But just a couple days before the marathon, McCallum is helping to set up for Sunday's race.

"I'm walking, not running," she said. "Running is a little harder than I thought."

McCallum said her decision to walk this year's half marathon is to raise awareness for Crohn's disease because of a 5-year-old boy named Jazz, who she said suffers from the disease.

"He's been a great inspiration for all of us," she said.

Crohn's disease causes pain in the digestive tract.

"I started this just for me and it ended up being for Jazz and for those who suffer from Crohn's and colitis," she said. "I'm faster than what I was when I first started. But now I out walk my husband."

McCullum will be walking alongside others supporting research to fight the disease, wearing orange shirts to support research.

"(The walk is) so that other children who get this at an early age won't have to do the suffering like (Jazz) did for the first couple of years," she said.

Crohn's and colitis affect more than 2 million people nationwide.

The marathon starts at 3 p.m. and the half marathon at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
