LAS VEGAS -- A worker has died after being struck by falling material on a construction project along I-15, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
The construction accident happened shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday and involved equipment falling on the man as he was placing barriers in the median.
The man was not an employee of NDOT, but worked for a subcontractor.
"First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family during this extremely difficult time," NDOT spokesman Damon Hodge said in a statement. "We are saddened by this news. When something like this happens, it gives us all pause."
All but one lane of I-15 northbound near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway was closed to traffic. Southbound traffic was being diverted onto the freeway shoulder. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death.
