LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A new survey says Nevada comes in just below the national average for underage drinking.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health found 24.5 percent of Nevada residents between the ages of 12 and 20 drank liquor in the previous month.

That's below than the national underage drinking rate of 26.6 percent, and gives the state the 13th lowest rate in the country.

Vermont had the highest rate of underage drinking, according to the survey, with 37 percent of minors there reporting they drank alcohol in the past month. Utah had the lowest rate, at 14.3 percent.

The report was released last week by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. It averaged survey data from 2008 to 2010.
