LAS VEGAS -- Job hunting in the month of December is turning out to be a good bet for many people looking for work through temporary hiring agencies.
According to a recent report in Fortune magazine, employment agencies place more job candidates in December than in any other month of the year.
Two Las Vegas hiring agencies said they are swamped with employers who are looking to hire through the end of this month.
Annielisa Frame said she isn't taking advantage of Cyber Monday deals. On this day, she is using a computer inside a Manpower hiring agency looking for a job.
In May, Frame laid off from her job at Flextronics Aerotek in North Las Vegas, Nev.
"The company closed down and I don't know what happened," she said. "They started laying off people."
She said she has her eye on a position at an area ice cream factory. She said she has had to depend on her friends to survive.
"Right now, it's hard," Frame said. "I owe people. Someone is helping me, I owe them. When I get a job, I will start paying."
Andy Katz of Manpower said December is a good month for people such as Frame. Some employers have "use or lose" budgets that must be spent before the end of the year.
"Now is a really good time to do it," Katz said. "We are working with three or four companies that are gearing up for their peak period, distribution centers, call centers, manufacturers.""
Across town at Millenium Staffing Services, Donna Lattanzio said jobs are out there, especially in December, and people shouldn't wait until the New Year.
"We are so busy, we can't keep base," she said. "January becomes a very competitive month, because everyone has that mindset, they've made their New Year's resolution, it's time to look for a career so you are up against quite a bit of competition."
Both agencies said they have noticed potential workers showing up for jobs not properly dressed for an interview and that typos on resumes are commonplace.
