LAS VEGAS -- A lot of people chose not to hit the stores, but instead headed up the mountain to enjoy opening day at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort.

Friday marked the 50th opening day for the resort. It also marked the debut of $2 million worth of improvements, including a remodeled restaurant, new locker rooms and new ski runs.

The resort had to use man-made snow for the opening day. It took nearly 2.6 million gallons of water to create the snow for skiers and snowboarders.

"We had people showing up here before 8 a.m. Our lifts started turning at 9, so we definitely had some demand. We had people picking up passes and buying lift tickets and we have had a pretty good turnout so far," Kevin Stickleman with the ski resort said.

According to the resort, more than 300 people enjoyed the snow and the sun. The resort is offering special deals for guests through the weekend. To see lift ticket and season pass prices, go to skilasvegas.com.
