Vegas DA, Family Services Join Forces in Courts

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The Clark County district attorney's office and the county Department of Family Services have begun working together in child abuse and neglect cases.

DA Steve Wolfson announced Thursday that since last week, DA deputies have been representing Family Services in foster care court proceedings.

In the past, Family Services and the district attorney's office acted separately.

The agencies appear in Family Court hearings about the removal of a child from parents due to allegations of abuse or neglect.

It's up to judges to determine when a child can safely be returned to parental custody.

Clark County took over the foster care program from the state in 2004, and handles more than 15,000 reports of child abuse and neglect a year.

Wolfson says the American Bar Association recommends the joint representation.
