Henderson Police Shoot at Man in Albertsons

Posted: Updated:

HENDERSON, Nev. -- Henderson Police officers shot and wounded an armed suspect barricaded in a grocery store bathroom after the man aimed what was believed to be a handgun at the officers.

An employee at the Albertson's grocery store on Boulder Highway called 911 about 3:35 p.m. Wednesday after walking into a bathroom and being confronted by a man holding a handgun.

Another person in the store indicated to store security that the man had a child in the bathroom with him.

"Officers made contact with him urging him to surrender," Henderson Police PIO Keith Paul said. "He was in the back bathroom talking with him through the door and they could hear, but they couldn't make out what he was saying."

SWAT officers were called to the scene and again tried to get the suspect to surrender. He slowly pushed the door open about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday with the gun raised at officers. He refused officers' commands to drop the gun, placing the officers in danger. The man's actions forced the officers to fire.

Three SWAT officers fired, striking the man, who fell back into the bathroom. The officers, who did not know if there was a child in the bathroom, quickly entered. The officers pulled the suspect out so he could receive medical attention from the paramedics who were standing by during the standoff.

It was not determined that the suspect's handgun was a pellet gun –  made to look like a real semi-automatic handgun – until investigators picked the weapon up and inspected it.

Detectives are still trying to verify the suspect's identity.

Officers found no child in the bathroom, which was located in the back of the store; however, police found an infant-sized doll on the changing table along with the man's belongings. The man was taken to Sunrise Medical Center's Trauma Unit for treatment and was last listed in critical condition Wednesday night.

Police are investigating why the suspect was in the grocery store bathroom with a gun.

The names of the officers involved will be released 48 hours from the time of the incident per Department policy.

The officers were placed on routine paid administrative leave during the investigation of the incident.
