SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) -- Officials said several miles of Interstate 15 in southern California have been closed as a wildfire has grown to more than 350 acres amid Santa Ana winds and some evacuations have been ordered.
The interstate is the main highway from the region to Las Vegas. Southbound I-15 is closed at Highway 138. Northbound I-15 is closed at Sierra Avenue. Also closed is nearby northbound 215 at Palm/Kendall exit and Cajon Boulevard, the former Route 66, between Kenwood and Cleghorn.
U.S. Forest Service dispatcher Elizabeth Barrera said the fire began shortly before 11 a.m. Monday in Cajon Pass in San Bernardino County.
More than 450 firefighters aided by 10 aircraft are battling the flames in hot, dry weather on brush-dotted foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains.
An area known as Mathews Ranch has been ordered evacuated. It's not clear how many people that involves.
Television news reports show the line of flames has jumped the freeway and sent an enormous mushroom shaped cloud into the sky.
